Final Challenge Post

Everyone has done an excellent job on the research and production of your final project. I am so excited to see the final results. Please have one group member post the following information in the comment section of this post. PLEASE follow the directions!

1. List everyone's first name in the group.
2. In one sentence, explain what cause you chose.
3. List the ELA standard(s) you used and how you used it.
4. List the Algebra standard(s) you used and how you used it.
5. List the Science standard(s) you used and how you used it.
6. List the Performing Arts you used and how you used it.
7. List the Social Studies standard(s) you used and how you used it.
8. Copy and paste the link to your product(s). (Your product should have all of the ELA, SS, Algebra, and Science activities in it.)
9. As a group, reflect on the following questions and answer them.
  • Do you feel your cause is something relevant to the world today? Why?
  • Do you feel the actions you took spread the word about your cause? Explain.
  • Do you feel that everyone in your group played an equal part? If yes, explain what everyone did. If no, explain how you could change the way the group is organized in order to help the equality in the project next time.
  • Do you feel like this was a great way to learn the standards? If yes, explain why you will remember them more this way? If no, how can we change it to make it a better learning process?
9) Please make sure each group member answers the poll on the blog page!

Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this learning process! I loved seeing you excited about what you were doing!

We chose to do a video on the Japan crisis and how people with no money can still help out.
ELA Standards~ We included our spelling words in our product, and we wrote a research paper on Japan.
Algebra Standards~ We included standard 15.0- Students applying algebraic techniques to solve rate problems, work problems, and percent mixture problems. We put a page on this into a powerpoint about finding the volume of a tsunami wave.
Science Standards~ We used science standard B- Students know the idea of atoms explains the conservation of matter; in chemical reactions, the number of atoms stays the same no matter how they are arranged, so their total mass stays the same. We included this on a powerpoint slide talking about the law of conservation of mass/energy and related it to the destruction on Japan.
Performing Arts~ Oragami cranes to help out Japan was our connection to performing arts.
Social Studies Standards~ Our social study standards were included in our research paper, which talked about the civil war reconstruction.

1.) Yes, I believe our topic on the Japan earthquake/tsunami is relevant to the world today because the earthquake struck earlier this month and will take at least 5 years to reconstruct from all the damage that has been done.
2.) Yes, because the world has easy access to our product because it is accessible on the world wide web.
3.) I think Marissa did more work because she works with computers better, and the product was saved on her computer so she could work on it more. Next time, the group work can be more equally shared because everyone has a more free schedule now.
4.) Yes,because it is more of a visual learning experience, rather than book work, which is boring and easily forgotten.

We chose to inform the public about the disaster in Japan. The ELA relation is our research essay, the math relation is the tsunami equation and radiation levels, the science relation is the nuclear power, the performing arts relation is Japanese dance, arts, and poetry, and the social studies relation is comparing and contrasting the Civil War and Japan.

    2. We chose to do a Facebook page on how to help Japan.
    3. For the ELA Standard we wrote Haiku’s with our Spelling Words.
    4. For the Alg. Standard we wrote the algebraic falling model to see how long it took for the tsunami to hit the ground.
    5. For the Performing Arts we wrote Haikus, which are a form of art.
    6. For the Social Studies Standards we compared the Civil War and the Japan disaster.
    7. As a group, reflect on the following questions and answer them.
    a) Do you feel your cause is something relevant to the world today? Why?
*Of course, the Japan disaster is one of the world’s biggest present tragedies. Thousands of people are homeless, injured, and hungry right now. It also affects us because many of our products are made in Japan.
    b) Do you feel the actions you took spread the word about your cause? Explain.
*Yes, we feel we did as much as possible as kids. We made an international Facebook page that anyone can view, and it gives people a way donate to Japan. We may also even buy wristbands and sell them to provoke people to help Japan.
    c) Do you feel that everyone in your group played an equal part? If yes, explain what everyone did. If no, explain how you could change the way the group is organized in order to help the equality in the project next time.
*Not entirely equal, we were close though. To make it more equal, we could assign every person a specific job, and they would have to do it.
    d) Do you feel like this was a great way to learn the standards? If yes, explain why will remember them more this way. If no, how can we change it to make it a better learning process?
*Yes, because it incorporated modern technology, and kids love to use that. Also, we weren’t just kids in it, we were acting as adults and given the power to help a cause we believed in. We weren’t babied in any way, we were told to make a difference. That’s why we will remember all of the standards.

We chose to address the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in Japan. For the ELA standard, we did a research report. For the algebra standard we used: 5.0 Students solve multistep problems, including word problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step, and creates an equation to tell how deep the water was when the tsunami first started. For the science standard we used: c. Students know chemical reactions usually liberate heat or absorb heat, and told how nuclear power is generated. For Social Studies, we connected the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the Wave of Immigration to the current situation in Japan. Scott also wrote a newsletter about karate for the performing arts standard. if you want to see everything, you can check it out on 31st On Fire.

    Questions:
    1) Our cause is extremely relevant in the world today because people are helpless and dying, and their country is at the point of no return. Many miles of land will be uninhabitable for years to come due to radiation, building damage and contaminated food and water supplies.
2)Yes, we do feel that it spreads the word about our cause. But its not like nobody knows about the disaster in Japan, even the Amish(from their PDA's).
3)Yes, we all played an equal part in the product, Scott wrote the script, I made the website, Trevor put together the video and filmed it, Blake wrote an essay, and Arya and Courtney edited the essay.
4)No, although it was much more entertaining than sitting and doing work in our notebooks, we didn't all learn the standards as well as we could've. A few ways to make the learning more efficient is to have everyone look up a certain amount per day. Another way is to have every group research a different topic about a subject and then you could put all of the work together.

-We chose the disaster in Japan.
-Typed a compare and contrast essay, Facebook page.
    -Put Tsunami formula on Facebook.
-We researched the schematics of a nuclear reactor.
-Posted a video on Facebook page.
-Compare and contrast essay to the clean up of Civil war vs clean up of Japan.
    Andy's Answers:
Its relavant but i feel it isn't worthwhile.
No everyone already knows about it and it didn't generate any really big impact at all
Yes Trevor and I split the work directly in two
No, choose a subject more in our cirricular studies.
    Trevor's Answers:
Yes, it affcts the whole globe
    possibly
    same as andys
No, i liked the history day type projects.

  8. Answers 2 the long questions-Yes, we think our cause is very helpful towards Japan and will inform the public about what's going on. Yes, a website is a modern, easily accessible tool that everyone can go on. For the most part, despite a few distractions, everyone in our group helped out equally due to Casey's organization and orders. Next time, we should be seated differently to avoid off topic talking. Yes this was a great way to learn because we had fun and will remember what we learned.:)

2)Throughout our group, we decided to create our challenge on the earthquake and tsunami happening March 11, 2011 in Japan.
3)We used a writing standard for our ELA portion. It will be presented through our essay.
4)We used an equation to represent the amount of money that Japan had, and how much they will need in the futue. That equation is posted on our Facebook Page, and is in a note.
5)For the science standards we used how unbalanced forces cause the velocity to change. We used it to prove that the plates shifted to cause the earthquake and tsunami.
    6)Yes we did :)
    7) For our Performing Arts standard we chose a media pathway and here is a link to a video focusing on the crisis in Japan: Sorry, can get the link on:/

9)Do you feel your cause is something relevant to the world today? Why?
---- Yes we do, because technology is spreding across the world to all different types of ages and one of the quickest ways to spread the word is throgh technology.
Do you feel the actions you took spread the word about your cause? Explain.
--- Yes. Like I explained abouve ^. Technology is everywhere and is available to almost everyone and is the easiest way to spread the word.
Do you feel that everyone in your group played an equal part? If yes, explain what everyone did. If no, explain how you could change the way the group is organized in order to help the equality in the project next time.
---- No. I think this because yes people did o things but it would end up everybody goofing around while 2 people do things. I think as a group we could have planned it out more and always had everyone doing something. That way we could have finished faster and be more proactive.
Do you feel like this was a great way to learn the standards? If yes, explain why you will remember them more this way? If no, how can we change it to make it a better learning process?
----No, because yes I did use the standards but it is things I have already learned. Howver it waswa good review and iI learned many different things during this experience.
