  4. Japan has suffered a massive disaster, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011. After this horrific event, more chaos broke out including tsunamis, fires, and blackouts. Many lives were lost along with homes, animals, and buildings. Trying to reconstruct them, Japan has had help with the United States as well as many other countries. The Civil War, another staggering event in 1861, was between the northern and southern states in the U.S. about slavery. Like Japan the United States needed to reconstruct their country, and fix every piece of damage done. Both the Civil War, and Japan Earthquake have similarities, as you will read in the sections below.

  7. ¶2 After the horrible disaster in Japan, the country is in dire need to rebuild. An important question that is asked is 'what does Japan need to rebuild?’ Well, in a word, everything. Japan does not make any raw materials for itself. They would have to buy all needed materials, costing about $200 billion, while already being a country in debt. Japan’s buildings, such as their nuclear power plants, have been destroyed in the tsunami and earthquake. Without the plants that they use for power, they have a very limited source of energy now. Also, the radiation that has been released from the destroyed power plants is an extreme health hazard. Getting residents to stay, or move back there would be a problem because they don’t want to endanger their children’s lives and their own with radiation poisoning. Although it will take an extreme amount of money, effort, and time, Japan will get rebuilt and regain its life, leaving this wreckage in the past.

  8. The situation in Japan is a heartbreaking story. Thousands of innocent people lost loved ones and precious belongings. The entire country of Japan is now frantic, trying to rebuild their cities. This is somewhat relative to the US Reconstruction Era. After the Civil War, the United States had to rebuild, not only the broken buildings, but also the broken foundation of our once powerful country. The Civil War has been called the bloodiest war in all of American history, which is true, considering that Americans were fighting each other. This war was flamed by the controversy of slaves, pitting the North and South against each other. When the war neared its end, the Reconstruction Era began to take action. The Reconstruction was the rebuilding of America’s great nation. If not for the reconstruction, America would still be up against itself and our nation would suffer.

  9. The situation during the Civil War and the one in Japan have many similarities. All lot of lives were lost during the Civil war and the earthquake in Japan. Japan's government is falling apart along with its buildings. The Civil War almost tore America apart at the seems. During the civil war the south had a lack of factories and industry giving them a huge disadvantage. Japan has a lack of raw materials; with their large amount of debt, this will just dig a bigger hole. Japan is a very powerful country that is now falling to shambles because of this giant earthquake; it will take a long time to recover what they have lost. They also have there differences too. During the civil war we had Americans killing Americans, but in Japan the earthquake, tsunami, and radiation were what was killing citizens. America recovered after the Civil War and so will Japan.
