Oprah Winfrey
Imagine a life where you are being sexually abused and living in such poor
conditions that you wear dresses made of potato sacks to school. No one watches
over you, and you were constantly made fun of because of what you wear. Now
imagine that in less than 33 years, you manage to turn everything around. You
now live in riches, and fame. You are loved internationally, and your bank
account balance is larger than the amount of digits in your phone number. Oprah
Winfreymanaged to do this, and continues to thrive today. This great influence
was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954, to unmarried parents who
soon separated. This legacy had a difficult childhood, but eventually became a
talk show host, a writer, a radio station host, and much more. Impacting the
world today by changing the view of people towards African Americans, and having
incredible success, Oprah was truly remarkable as she lived through a difficult
childhood, became successful, and impacted our world.
For the first six years of life, Orpah lived with her grandmother, Hattie Mae
Lee. When she was 6, she moved to live with her birth mother. Growing up, Orpah
(original name from the Bible) was made fun of constantly at school, when she
wore potato sack dresses to school. People also often made mistakes when it came
to writing and pronouncing Orpah’s name. She eventually changed it to Oprah, as
it was easier to work with. Unlike other children, Oprah’s first school year
wasn’t in kindergarten. She skipped it. Www.notablebiographies.comstates that
Oprah “skipped kindergarten after writing a note to her teacher on the first day
of school saying she belonged to the first grade. She was promoted to third
grade after that year.” At such a young age, she managed to advance in the
educational field already. Life at school was a great experience, as Oprah
excelled in what she applied herself to do. Time passed, and around the age of 9
years old, she began to become sexually abused by friends and family of her
mother. Her mother, whom she was living with, didn’t have much supervision over
her daughter. She was usually out doing odd jobs. At 12 years of age, Oprah
moved to Tennessee with her father. There, she was still educationally inclined,
and began to speak out about her feelings. She began to apply for speech
contests, to earn money to further continue her education. This became a
constant hobby she worked on. Eventually, after applying for a scholarship, she
earned enough money to attend Nicolet High School. After listening to the news,
her father began to become even more inclined with her life. Oprah’s father
changed her life, as he straightened her up, and provided her with guidance.
Www.notablebiographies.comonce again states “He required his daughter to
complete weekly book reports, and she went without dinner until she learned five
new vocabulary words each day.” Eventually, Oprah Winfrey accumulated enough
scholarships to enter Tennessee State University. During her first year at that
school, she won Ms. Tennessee, and was offered a job at a local news station.
She turned it down twice, but the third time, she accepted. She was now the
first African- American, at 19, to be on evening news as a co-anchor. Oprah
climbed up the stairs of fame from then on.
From local news updates, Oprah Winfrey went on to being part of Good
Morning
Americaand then Baltimore Is Talking. Later in life, Oprah even became part of
local A.M. Chicago after sending in an audition tape. AM Chicago was a talk show
that was incredibly unpopular. Oprah brought the show ahead, by focusing on
current debatable topics. The program was renamed the Oprah Winfrey Showand
expanded time wise to a whole hour. She earned popularity for her show after
starring in The Color Purple, as a result, www.notablebiographies.com states
“after the success of The Color Purple, and in September 1985 the distributor
King World bought the syndication rights (the rights to distribute a television
program) to air the program in one hundred thirty-eight cities, a record for
first-time syndication. That year, although Donahue was being aired on two
hundred stations, Winfrey won her time slot by 31 percent, drew twice the
Chicago audience as Donahue, and carried the top ten markets in the United
States.” Throughout this time, the dedicated young female also wrote a series of
books, and opened up two magazines. They also became a huge success. The
millions made from her success were used to open Oprah’s school for children
called Academy of Achievement. Sexual abusewas coming from this school, so she
improved the screening, and did everything in her power to stop it. The problem
stopped. Oprah continued to be a success, as
http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/win0bio-1 states, “The Oprah Winfrey
Showremained as popular as ever, airing in 140 countries around the world” She
has become a huge success beyond imagination. There is much she has impacted our
world in, being such an influential woman.
Years before Oprah’s fame, television was mainly based on
traditional talk
topics. Oprah demonstrated change, by talking about current events, and
interviewing people that were new, and fresh. Her interview between Michael
Jackson was an immense step forward for upcoming generations.
www.oprah.comstates “Michael, a fiercely private entertainer, had refused to
give an interview for 14 years. The unprecedented live event, which took place
before any allegations were made about sexual abuse, drew a worldwide audience
of 90 million people”. “Oprah also made an impact, as her dedication got her to
be the first female African American on the road of fame. She became a
billionaire during the first 33 years of her life, and continues to impact our
world today. She demonstrated through her life that as she once stated “IT
doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from. The ability to triumph begins
with you. Always.” (www.achievement.org) The powerful, and successful female has
proved “you don't have to fit the "Hollywood mold' (thin) to be successful and a
well-liked celebrity” (http://answers.yahoo.com/).
Looking at the life of a powerful, female African American, known as
Oprah
Winfrey, you can tell that she truly has made a remarkable impact on society in
the media today. It all began at a struggling childhood, as an outcast, yet
turned out to be rags to riches story. Continuously at the top today, she has
dedicated her life to showing that dreams do come true, you just have to believe
and work hard. She is an amazing person. She is a billionaire today, and instead
of taking that money for herself; she continues to provide girls all over the
world with a safe school and environment to become educated in, and able to
attend. They say that everybody dies, but not everybody lives; yet Oprah
Winfrey up to today, has done the exact opposite, as a remarkable influence in
today’s society.

By: Alex Soto,
Kristen Vilett, and
Taryn Perricone
Step-By-Step Instructions:
1.) Decide which kind of ribbon you wish to use.
2.) Gather materials such as: scissors, clips of your choice, hot glue for security and extra ribbon just in case you make a mistake.
3.) Take both ends of the ribbon and cross them over to tie a knot. Pull the ends tight and then grab one of the ends to make a loop towards the center of the knot. Take the remaining part of ribbon and wrap it around the loop at the base. Pull the wrapped around ribbon at the base through the looped side of the bow.
4.) Pull the ends tight and make sure they are even. Your finished product should then look like a shoe-lace bow. Insert the bobby-pin or clip through an open slit of the base of the bow.
5.) Congratulations! You learned the easy steps on making a shoe-laced hair bow. Enjoy!
Importance of Hair Bows:
It is important to know how to make a shoe laced bow because in the process of making a shoe laced bow you can also know how to tie a shoe lace in a perfect format. Girls 8 and up should know how to tie a bow like this, so they can make a bow for their outfit and it can teach them the basic steps of tying a shoe lace.

"...there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch." (pg. 628). To me this is one of Poe's most descriptive quotes. He uses this quote to describe how the killer was so close to the old man that that he could hear the beating of his heart. This was when the killer decided to put the mattress over the man and kill him. This was also the most important part in the short story. "...a pale blue eye with a film over it."(pg 625) This quote is described to explain the old man's eye. With this quote you can really imagine the structure of the old mans eye. Blue, shadowy, looks like a vulture. Poe really emphasizes in imagery and i think that is why he is such a great author.
Along with characterization and imagery Edgar Allan Poe always has a great plot to keep his readers hooked to his story.
"I made up my mind to take the life of the old man." (pg 626). This quote tells what the story is about; for the psycho man to rid himself of the old man's eye that drives him insane. I think this quote was a key part to the story for two reasons. One, if this quote wasn't in the story the readers would be left in suspense of what happened to the old man and two, this quote was a give away to show that the man was actually psychotic. "I cut off the head and the arms and the legs." (pg 626). This quote was very descriptive on how the old man dealt with the body after it was murdered. If you were to read on you would find that one of the neighbors called the cops because she/he heard a scream. The murderer decided to cut the body up and put him under the floor boards. When the cops came he was so nervous that they would find out that he confessed he murdered the old man.
In this story, Edgar Allan Poe uses incredible uses of writing to keep his readers, well, reading! He uses imagery, characterization, and plot. In all the categories, Poe uses great quotes to explain what is going on. "...there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch..." This is just one of many quotes that Poe uses in the Imagery category. Edgar Allan Poe may be one of the best writers that uses the three main categories for well written literature.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are a very popular and delicious part of America, but where did the PB&J come from? In 1901, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich title was published by Julia Davis Chandler. The sandwich immediately became a hit and is still very popular in the United States. The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a yummy treat with nutritional value, too. It has jelly made from healthy fruit, peanuts that give you protein, and bread, which is a good source of fiber and grains. We will now be teaching you how to create this delicious food.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Materials:
- 2 Slices of Bread (your choice: white, wheat, potato, etc.)
- 1 Plate
- 1 Jar of Peanut Butter: 1-2+ Tbs. (chunky or smooth depending on your preference)
- 1 Jar of Jelly: 1+ Tbs. (any flavor of your choice)
- 1-2 Knives
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steps:
- Wash your hands with warm water and soap in the sink. Turn on the water, put your hands underneath the faucet, put soap on them, and scrub vigorously for at least 20 sec.
- Take out a plate, two slices of bread, and a knife.
- Set the slices on the plate perpendicular (side by side) to each other.
- Take out a jar of peanut butter and a jar of jelly.
- Unscrew lid of peanut butter jar (counter clockwise) and set it on the counter.
- Pick up knife carefully by non-sharp side and dip the sharp end of the knife into the jar of peanut butter and use it to scoop the peanut butter out. The amount of peanut butter varies on your preference. However, the recommended amount would 1-2 Tbs.
- Note: The more peanut butter you use the stickier and harder and to chew the sandwich will be.
- Take knife (now covered in peanut butter)and place peanut butter side on bread and spread peanut butter on one slice of the bread. If you need more peanut butter, repeat step 6 and add another layer.
- If you wish to have a clean knife for your jelly, you can either get a new knife or rinse off the knife you’re using.
- Unscrew lid off jelly (counter clockwise) and place it on the counter.
- Repeat what you did with the peanut butter, but with jelly on the other slice of bread.
- Take the two slices of bread (one with peanut butter, one with jelly) and match them up and stick them together with the peanut butter and jelly on the inside to create the sandwich.
- (Optional) You may take the knife and cut the sandwich diagonally, horizontally, or vertically through the middle depending on your preference.
- Put materials away and clean up by: Screwing the peanut butter lid back on the jar (clockwise). Do the same with the Jelly. Put them both back in the refrigerator. Wash the knife/knives and put it/them back where you found it/them. (Probably a drawer.) Wipe up any spilled peanut butter or jelly from off of the counter using a wet paper towel. Afterwards, use a dry paper towel to finish cleaning the counter. Throw the used paper towels in the trash can.
- Yum! Yum! Maybe get a glass of cold milk and eat it up!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warnings/Hazards:
- DO NOT make this sandwich if you have a peanut, bread, or fruit allergy. However, if you know which fruit you are allergic to you may pick a different type of jelly and proceed enjoying your sandwich.
- Be sure to hold knife very carefully. Always hold by non-sharp side and spread ingredients cautiously.
- To avoid serious injury or even death keep knives out of reach of small children children.
- Children under the age of 6 yrs old should not be attempting to make this sandwich.
- We are not responsible for any injuries/fatalities that occur while making this sandwich. Thank you and enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have taught you how to create the oh-so-yummy peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Now you can go home and make yourself this simple yet delicious snack. This sandwich is important because millions of people enjoy this yummy treat every day. “Can You Teach Me How To Jerk”
The Jerk
The original Jerk has been around since 2009 when a music group called the New Boyz released a song called “You’re a Jerk”. Through out the music video they made a dance exactly like the dance we are about to teach you. Their new dance was a hit! People all around the United States started doing the jerk to add some swag into their dance routines. The New Boyz also incorporated The Reject -a dance in the 1980’s mimicking the Running Man. The Reject was forgot of until the New Boyz brought it back into our era. After the New Boyz released “You’re a Jerk” people all over the world incorporated the Jerk and Reject into their every day lives. Whether it was for fun or for competition, everyone loved it. Through out the years dance crews have made new moves to go along with the Jerk and Reject. Some of these moves are the Pin-Drop, the Step-Through, the Dougie, the Heel-Toe, and the Advanced Reject. Although these dance moves are known through out the nation, they aren’t the easiest to perfect. That’s why we’re here to teach you.
Materials:
- Flat and soft surface/grass
- Shoes
- Music (Teach me How to Jerk, Cool Whip, I’m tasty- Instrumental, You’re a Jerk)
Tip:
Each of these different steps are moves that you can incorporate into your style of jerking. We will explain each step and you can encompass them all together in whatever order or fashion you desire.
Steps:
The Reject
1. Start in the flamingo position with your right leg on the ground and your left leg up.
2. Step back with your left leg and lock out your right leg diagonal to the ground.
3. Step forward with your left leg and back into the flamingo position except now this time your left leg is down and your right leg is up.
4. Step back with your right leg and lock out your left leg diagonal to the ground.
5. Step forward with your right leg and now your back to your starting position.
6. Repeat and you’ve learned the reject.
The Step Through
**There is two variations to this dance move. It all depends on what is comfortable with you.
Variation 1
1. Grab your left foot (toes) with your right hand.2. Bring the above formation to the heigth of your knee and about five inches out.
3. Jump through your left leg with your right leg and end up with the left leg behind your right leg (behind the crook of your knee).
4. That’s it...you’ve learned the Step-Through!
** The other variation is the exact opposite of the above steps. So, instead grab your right foot (toes) and from there you should have it.
The Jerk
1.Start off with feet a little more then shoulder width apart and bend your knees slightly.
2.Angle them whichever way you feel most comfortable.
3.Wiggle your knees back and forth. 4.Let your arms flow to the beat of the music.
The Pin Drop
** There is two variations to this move also. I depends on what YOU are comfortable with.
1. Put your right foot in the crook of your left leg.
2. Drop down to the ground, but catch your self with your right foot.
3. As your standing up, spin up clockwise to the right.
4. Make a full spin and end up standing straight up with your 2 feet on the ground.
The Dip
1. Dip down (squat) all the way to the ground with feet together.
2. Jump up off the ground.
3. Half way through jumping up, put your right heel to the ground and your left toe to the ground.
4. Stand with right heel and left toe still on the ground.
5. Repeat
The Sponge Bob
1. Jump to the right about 12 inches with your right foot.
2. Have your left foot locked out diagonally pointing to the left.
3. Jump in towards your left foot and bring your left foot by the crook of your right leg.
4. Jump to the left about 12 inches with your left foot.
5. Have your right leg locked out diagonally pointing to the right.
6. Jump in towards in towards your right foot and bring your right foot by the crook of your left leg.
7. Repeat and you’ve learned the Sponge Bob.
Back Tuck
1. Stand in a candle stick position (arms above head parallel to each other, beside your ears).
2. Bring your knees up to your chest.
3. Rotate in a backwards direction.
4. Flip until you rotate 360 degrees and your feet land on the ground.
5. You will be in a standing up position.
Hazards:
-Stepping on your ankle when doing the step through if you don’t make it all the way through the motion.
-Twisting of the ankle. For example in the pin drop when you are twisting up, it is possible to twist your ankle by shifting your weight to much to one side, therefore your ankle would twist.
-You could fall on face when doing the jump-rope, if your foot doesn’t get above and over the leg that you made a four with then you will most likely fall on your face.
-Wear shoe that supports ankle to prevent ankle injury for example tennis shoes such as Nike’s.
-Wear hair up so it doesn’t get tangled or potential whip lash.
-Do not do on hard surfaces in case any of the injuries or hazards, provided above do occur, you will at least have a softer landing.
-Possible sore legs from extensive jerkin.
The jerk is one of many dances around the world. It has become very popular in the United States today, performed by a big percentage of the youth. Many people have careers based on dancing such as the Jerk. A perfect example would be the back up dancers and even the lead singer for the musical group, New Boyz. An entertaining and exciting performance to watch, the Jerk will always be remembered as a favorite dance for many Americans!

Introduction:
The ollie is the building block of skateboarding, as in you have to learn to do an ollie before you can do any other airborne tricks. The ollie could be considered as a “go-to” trick once you get good at it. The first time you skate a spot, you think of trying to ollie it first, it’s basic and easy. An ollie is a basic flat ground maneuver where the skateboarder and board leap into the air, remaining in contact throughout the jump. An ollie is a simple trick that realistically anyone can learn, all you really need is patience and a lot of practice to get it down. Alan “Ollie” Gelfand was the inventor of the ollie on vert, bowls and pipes. Rodney Mullen is the one that officially started doing it on the streets as in he was the first to do it on flat. We will try to explain the steps in learning this very essential trick.

- Complete skateboard (deck, grip tape, hardware, trucks, wheels, bearings) I personally ride a Girl deck, Grizzly Grip, Diamond Hardware, Venture Trucks, Bones Wheels, Bones Red bearings.
- Open, smooth surface. Concrete is the best when learning.
- Safety gear if preferred: helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and closed toe tennis shoes.
- Skateboarding shoes (might help if learning) Some good brands of shoes you could get are Lakai, Etnies, éS, DC, and Vans.
↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Apply all safety gear(if needed) and put together complete skateboard. Apply helmet to head, elbow pads on elbows, knee pads on knees, and wrist guards on wrists.
- Find a nice spot with a smooth surface and make sure that it is okay(legal) to ride there. Watch out for warning signs prohibiting no skateboarding. (no skateboarding signs)
- Once you are there, warm up by riding around and getting a good feel for the board. Do this by standing on your board, whichever stance is comfortable, and pushing yourself around with your back foot. Avoid obstacles by leaning left and right and used to the board your riding. Once you are warmed up, you are ready to start!
- Depending on whether you’re right foot (goofy footed) or left foot (regular footed) is in the front, whichever is comfortable, place your front foot right behind the upper bolts with your toes slightly hanging off the side of the board and have it at a slight angle pointing forward. Place your back foot on the tip of the tail right in the middle of the board straight across it.
- Make sure that all of the pressure you put is on your back foot. This will be the prime resource of the “pop” for the trick. Pop is what enables the board to be lifted into the air. The more pop you have, the higher your trick will go.
- Distribute your weight with eighty percent of your weight in your back foot and twenty percent of it on your back foot.
- Bend your knees at a 45 degree angle and lean your upper body forward so you can easily distribute your weight.
- Push down as hard as you can with your back foot and start a jumping motion as high as you can.
- Once the back wheels start to lift off the ground and your back leg is straight, start to push your front foot up toward the nose of the board and begin to jump. When you push your front foot, it should start to lift up and the board should start to lift up with you.
- Make sure that your shoulders are even with your nose and tail, because you don’t want to lean too far forward or too far back, then you might slip out. The nose is the front of the board where the board starts to concave and form a curved, upward shape, and the tail is the same thing only on the back of the board.
- The front foot should level out the Ollie, and your front foot should start to come back toward your front bolts once the Ollie is at its peak.
- Make sure that you keep your feet right over the board and push down, so the board comes in contact with the ground again.
- Once you land, bend your knees to take the impact and hopefully, you will ride away.
- As soon as you feel comfortable with the ollie flat and standing still, you can start learning it while riding. Once you get comfortable with that, you can start going up curbs and even take it off of ledges and stairs.
- Once you’ve got it down, you can start to learn to do kick flips and other basic tricks you should learn as a skateboarder.
↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝
Hazards and Safety Precautions:
- Make sure that if you are around other people, they are a safe distance away so that there is a less risk of running into them or slipping out and hitting them in the shins. This way, everyone is more safe.
- Warning: The board can and will hit you in many places including: shins, face, hands, and other body parts.(private area)
- Always wear the right safety equipment: helmets, pads, shoes, etc. This will lessen the risk of getting hurt from falls. They may not prevent major injuries, but they will help prevent them from occurring.
- Always watch out for other skaters, or curbs, ledges, cars, etc. (any objects) Don’t hurt yourself.
- PEBBLES! A skater’s worst nightmare is pebbles. You could just be riding along minding your own business and then out of nowhere... boom! You hit a pebble and go flying off the board. Injury can and will occur from pebbles. So beware and watch out.
- If you’re going too fast, never just jump off, make sure that you always slow down first, then jump off.
↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝↝
Conclusion:
Rodney Mullen opened a huge door for skaters around the world by doing the first ollie on flat ground which opened up a whole new perspective on the skateboarding world. Once you learn the ollie, every other trick starts opening up for you and will be a lot easier to learn. With the ollie being the base, starting trick you should learn, it is really important to take your time on it and perfect it before you start trying any other tricks. Once you learn this flat ground, airborne maneuver, skating will become a lot easier for you and it will become more exciting. Take your time, practice, be safe, and have fun with it.
